1. Kraków, Poland – A True Gem for Affordable European Cities

View of Wawel Castle in Kraków, Poland – one of the most affordable European cities to visit this summer

Aaah, Poland. Right? Kraków is one of those cities that feels straight out of a storybook, totally gives you the Cinderella vibes. With its cute and colorful town squares, centuries-old castles, and a youthful energy (thanks to its university scene), it offers a lot of great value for budget travelers. It’s a very walkable city, full of hidden alleys (a photographer’s dream), Gothic churches, and cozy cafes – exactly what you’d expect from one of the most affordable European cities.

Why Kraków is great for budget travelers:

  • You can grab a hearty Polish meal for under €10. It’s incredible affordable! Think pierogi, zurek soup, and grilled sausages! Everything you want while roaming around this beautiful city, if it’s your thing!

  • Entry to looooooots of museums and historic sites costs less than €5.

  • Public transport is amazingly cheap, but most attractions are within walking distance. So, we can even scratch this part of the list!

Top things to do in Kraków:

  • If you’re into castles like me, you should not miss Wawel Castle and explore its beautiful courtyards.

  • Do wander around the Main Market Square, as it is one of the largest medieval squares in whole Europe.

  • Go and take a day trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine or the somber but important Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial.

The city is also home to lively flea markets, street art, and free walking tours, which makes it very convenient to enjoy even if you’re counting your euros, and you can find a drinking buddy while doing this, eh?

2. Budapest, Hungary – A Classic Summer Destination in Budget-Friendly Europe

Okay, I don’t want to be biased but Budapest is for sure my favorite. This city is such a dream. Budapest has long been known as one of the best cheapest European cities, especially in the summer! You can compare your city’s Mcdonalds and in Budapest and your jaw will drop, trust me. This beautiful city is visually stunning – it is split by the Danube River, with grand architecture on both the Buda and Pest sides. In the summer, it comes alive with open-air bars, river cruises, and cultural festivals. It is particularly fun at night!

Budget-friendly perks of Budapest:

  • You should go and try delicious local dishes like goulash or chimney cakes for just a few euros. I am crazy about this chimney cakes, oh and do try them with Pistachio cream! Thank me later 😉

  • Soak in the iconic Széchenyi Thermal Baths (a whole-day pass won’t cost much). I personally have not tried this but I saw a few Instagram photos of this place and its definitely worth it to try!

  • They have a Budapest Card which gives you free public transport and discounts on museums and attractions.

Must-see spots in Budapest:

  • Fisherman’s Bastion for panoramic city views! Yes, please!

  • Buda Castle and its surrounding historical district

  • Margaret Island – a peaceful green escape right in the middle of the river

A lot of Budapest’s most magical moments are totally free – like watching the sunset from Gellért Hill or strolling across the Chain Bridge at night. It’s definitely a top pick for avid budget travelers who are looking for an affordable European summer travel getaway.

3. Porto, Portugal – Affordable Europe with Coastal Vibes

Close your eyes and think Pasteis de Nata. Done? Oh-hoh, you’re in here for a treat! Because Porto is our top 3. If you’re dreaming of wine like me, riverside views, and sun-kissed streets, Porto might just be your summer escape this year. It’s Portugal’s second city, but it has just as much soul and a slightly lower price tag than its famous city Lisbon, making it a must-see among cheapest European cities.

Why we love Porto for budget summer travel:

  • Meals are very generous and affordable. A full lunch menu (with wine! yes please!) often costs under €10. I know, right?!

  • Wine lovers can enjoy tastings at port wine cellars along the Douro River and listen to local acoustic singers giving the exact vibe you need for summer.

  • Hostels, guesthouses, and Airbnbs tend to be cheaper than in other major European cities, which is great, right?

Top experiences in Porto:

  • A definite must is to ride the old-fashioned tram line 1 through the city.

  • To visit Livraria Lello, the bookstore that inspired J.K. Rowling. Be prepared for a long line so it’s best to be early!

  • If you prefer to spend a lazy day at Matosinhos Beach just outside the city

This city’s relaxed atmosphere, warm people, and rich culture make it feel very luxurious even when you’re on a tight budget. That’s why it has become one of the most affordable European cities for culture and charm. It’s truly a must for budget travelers!

4. Valencia, Spain – A Budget Travel Favorite in Southern Europe

Traditional Valencian flags hanging in a vibrant neighborhood in Valencia, Spain – one of the most affordable European cities to visit this summer

The warmest people I’ve ever encountered are in Valencia. This city often flies under the radar, which is great news for travelers looking to save. It has stunning architecture, long sandy beaches (where you can just chill and drink gin and tonic, yes?), and one of the largest green park spaces in Europe running through its center. And best of all? It’s one of the most affordable European cities for beach lovers! Oooh-lala!

Budget highlights in Valencia:

  • You must definitely try the authentic paella (which is originated here!) for under €12.

  • Lots of museums and galleries offer free or discounted entrance, especially on Sundays. If you’re into museums, then you would enjoy this!

  • Bike rentals are very cheap, and it’s one of the most bike-friendly cities in Europe. 😉

What not to miss in Valencia:

This city is also ideal for small or big families traveling with kids – the beaches are so clean and calm, there are interactive museums for the little ones, and the city vibe is super laid-back. So as a parent, you would enjoy this place!
